Thai lass takes amateur open title
 
     
  THAILAND’S Yupaporn Kawin-pakorn shot one under 71 on the final day to win the Malaysian Ladies Amateur Open championship by three strokes at the Tropicana Golf and Country Resort recently.

The 17-year-old girl, who plays to a seven handicap, had a three round score of 221 (74--76-71) and won the Tunku Ampuan Challenge trophy.

Indonesia’s Ines Putri Tjiptadi Chandra and Malaysia’s Ainil Johani Abu Bakar completed the three-round championship with 224 strokes. However, the Indonesian was declared the runner-up after a countback.

  Ainil Johani, the bronze medalist at the 2007 SEA Games in Korat, Thailand, had to settle for the third spot.

Thailand also won the team gold medal when the trio of Chayuda Singhasuwan, Narapatra Phansri and Walaiphan Utama had a combined score of 298.

Two strokes behind were the Malaysian trio of Ainil Johani, Nurul Shim Abdul Aziz and Michele Ting with 301 on countback.

Third placed were Indonesia’s Ines Putri Tjiptadi Chandra and Lidya Ivana Jaya who also scored 301 points.

Kawinpakorn, a High School student, has been offered a place at the Florida Atlanta University.

“I want to become the best woman golfer in Thailand and I am half way there. I will be able to study as well as play golf when I join the university.

“My idol has always been Tiger Woods and I would like to be like him someday,’’ she said.

Nurul Syahirah Afiqah won the Division Two title with a three-day score of 240 (77-79-84), while Jacqueline Cheong was the winner in Division Three with a score of 277 (86-94-97).
