PETALING JAYA: About 100 residents from Tropicana and its surrounding neighbourhood took to the streets to protest against the closure of Jalan Tanjung in Bandar Utama here last evening.

Motorists had been caught unawares earlier in the morning when they found that the road had been barricaded and closed to traffic, causing a commotion along Lebuh Bandar Utama and Persiaran Tropicana during rush hour.

The diverted traffic caused a crawl along Lebuh Bandar Utama at the BU11 and BU12 area.

“There are many people affected by the road closure. MBPJ (the Petaling Jaya City Council) has been slow in dealing with this issue and the state government has not shown their commitment to help residents.

“We are staging the demonstration to express our displeasure,” said Tropicana Residents Association vice-president Mohamed Shukri Zain.

The crowd dispersed after about 20 minutes.

In a joint statement, Subang MP Sivarasa Rasiah and Bukit Lanjan assemblyman Elizabeth Wong said they were concerned about the matter and appealed for all parties to remain calm as the issue would be raised at the Selangor Economic Action Council meeting on Thursday.

Part of the land on which the road sits on belonged to the Bandar Utama developer, who announced recently that the road, which had served as an entrance and exit for motorists travelling between Tropicana and Bandar Utama, would be closed after being used as a temporary access road for the past 12 years.

A signboard was put up about two weeks ago announcing that the road would be changed to a one-way flow on November 20 (coming out of Tropicana) before being closed six months later.
