Grilled Calamari Salad with Arugula will charm even those who are not fond of squid

JUNE 13 — Pimento reminds me of one of those small restaurants in Italy or France tucked away below street level. You have to walk down a few steps at the restaurant annexe to the Tropicana Golf & Country Club in Petaling Jaya to reach it.

Inside is a rustic, cosy ambience, with warm lighting bouncing off cream textured walls and maroon drapes.

This new restaurant has opted to be an Italian one, as there is already a French one – Cuisine Studio – in the club. The Jarrod & Rawlins people are the owners so you can expect a certain standard of food and a bar well stocked with wines.

We were certainly pleased with the Grilled Calamari Salad, then the Smoked Salmon with Gorgonzola Cheese Pizza.

I’m not really fond of squid but this was grilled with sea salt and chilli flakes, had a little bite (not leathery) and I liked the chilli hotness on it. I’ve always liked arugula, so the salad was the bonus.

Have you ever noticed that when you eat pizza, the narrow end of it always flops down, spilling the topping with it? Pimento has solved this problem by introducing a rectangular pizza. I loved the combination of gorgonzola cheese and smoked salmon on this one, with the thin crust pizza completely covered with it.

There is a strong whoosh of cheese as you sink your teeth into the pizza, which meshes wonderfully with the smoked salmon. I held a slice of the pizza easily in my hand and it was good to the last bite.

The Grilled Barramundi with Salsa Verde is a healthy choice that is absolutely delicious

The chef also makes his own salt beef, and you can have this thinly sliced in a pizza, with arugula piled atop. The salt beef had a wonderful texture and aroma. All these, together with the generous tomato concasse base, produced delightful bursts of flavours in the mouth.

Pizzas are available for delivery around the Tropicana area.

I found fresh barramundi , an Australian seabass, at a new supermarket in PJ last week, after I had eaten the grilled one at Pimento’s. This is a very popular item at the restaurant. It’s grilled with sea salt, drizzled with olive oil and presented with lemon wedges, a small dish of salsa verde and garlic bread. It’s so healthy but it tastes so good.

Salsa verde is an Italian green sauce made with parsley, capers, garlic, anchovies, olive oil, pine nuts and wine vinegar. There was a little mustard in the Pimento salsa verde. I enjoyed the tart punch of it with the fish.

The Linguine Vongole exuded all the right flavours, with ribbons of basil, chilli flakes, garlic and clams.

The Roasted Organic Chicken is a bestseller at Pimento. Our portion was stuffed with sweet tomato paste and capsicums. The meat certainly has more flavour, and is firm and moist.

The Mascarpone Mango Lasagna is a taste of heaven. It’s thin, buttery filo pastry layered with mango and dollops of mascarpone cheese and whipped cream. It looks deceptively light. You wouldn’t let go till you finish all of it, the sweet, aromatic fruit against the luscious creamy cheese.

The Mango Lasagna is a slice of heaven

The Tiramisu is exceptional too, with the bottom layer soaked in kahlua and espresso.

Pizzas are priced from RM11.80 to RM32, depending on the topping, Roasted Organic Chicken is RM18 for a starter portion and RM32 for the main course, Linguine Vongole, RM24, Grilled Barramundi, RM42, Mango Lasagna and Tiramisu, RM18 each.

Pimento is pork free. It is located at the Tropicana Golf & Country Club, Jalan Kelab Tropicana, off Jalan Kelab Utama, 47410 Petaling Jaya. Tel: 03-7804 0565. It’s easily accessible. Just tell the guards at the gate you are dining there and they will wave you through.
